Do you know why it is necessary to reduce waste in the first place?
According to an announcement by the Ministry of the Environment, the total amount of garbage (general waste) discharged in Japan in 2019 was 42.74 million tons, an enormous amount equivalent to approximately 115 Tokyo Domes. The amount of garbage generated per person per day was 918 grams, and both the total amount of garbage generated and the amount of garbage generated per person per day remained unchanged.
In addition, the number of final disposal sites has decreased by 1.1% compared to the previous year, and the recycling rate is also on the decline.
When industrial waste is included in the calculations, the amount of waste generated becomes even more enormous.
Despite the fact that both the total amount of garbage and the amount of garbage generated per person are flat, the capacity and number of final disposal sites are decreasing, and there are concerns that the amount of waste that can be disposed of will not be able to be processed in the future.
There are various problems caused by garbage.
Processing costs are high.
Various costs are incurred to dispose of garbage. This cost increases with more waste.
Landfill shortage
Garbage is disposed of in landfills at final disposal sites. If there is a shortage of disposal sites, it will be necessary to clear away new forests and build new disposal sites, which will lead to environmental destruction.
burden on the environment
Transporting and incinerating garbage generates carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas. The generation of carbon dioxide leads to global warming, and as global warming progresses, it has a major impact on the earth's animal and plant ecosystems.
to reduce garbage
In order to reduce garbage, you can sort your garbage and be aware of the 5Rs. Let's start with what you can put into practice starting today.
recycling example
- Recycle milk cartons to make toilet paper
Milk cartons can be recycled to become toilet paper. Milk cartons are made of high-quality paper, so you can make one roll of toilet paper with just six milk cartons.
- aluminum can recycling
Recycling aluminum cans allows you to make them using less energy. Aluminum is made from an ore called bauxite, which requires a lot of energy. However, if aluminum is recycled using recovered aluminum cans, 33 recycled cans can be made using the same amount of energy used to make one new aluminum can.
